Our Philosophy

"If a child is to keep alive their inborn sense of wonder, they need the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with them the joy, excitement, and mystery of the world we live in."
-Rachel Carson

At Crystalaire Adventures, we empower young people through experiential learning. Our unique programming model emphasizes creativity, exploration, and community building. Our goal is to make a positive impact on each member of our community by building connections to self, others, and the natural world.

We work hard to create create meaningful experiences for all. When a participant finishes their time with us, we hope they will have a stronger sense of self and independence, a better understanding of how to relate to and communicate with others, and will have tried something new!

In all that we do, we embrace 5 central ideals:

Our collaborative programming model fosters strong leadership skills and independence while giving participants the opportunity to create their own experience.

The non-competitive culture creates a safe space for participants to try new things and take healthy social and physical risks.

Unplugged Connection

We are an unplugged community. Taking a break from the electronic world helps us reconnect with others in an authentic way and develop strong communication skills.

Free Time

Free time is incorporated multiple times throughout each day to give participants a chance to relax, explore new interests, and connect with others.

A sense of playfulness is ever-present in our programs. By having a fun and playful environment, we create a space to discover oneself and explore with others.

We have a different approach than most trips programs: through consensus decision making, the participants create their own experience. They have control over almost every aspect of their trip. These real-life decisions build community and impart leadership and teamwork skills.

The following are the central ideals that help us achieve our mission:

We Give Everyone the Skills to Lead

We believe that leaders are defined by what they do, not who they are. That means that everyone can lead while remaining true to themselves.

We Create the Experience Together

Our trips are created with equal input from the guides and the participants, which gives participants practical leadership experience during the trip. The group works together to decide what to eat, where to camp and how to spend their time.

We Instill a Love for the Land

Wild places- the awe they inspire and the challenges they present- are essential to our programs. We instill in our participants a land ethic that sees these places not as something “other” that can be conquered, but something we are a part of, need to respect and can learn from.

We Learn to Manage Risk

There are inherent risks in doing what we do, and valuable lessons to be learned from managing those risks. Our guides instruct the participants on how to assess hazards keeping in mind their own well-being and that of the group.

We Include Everyone

This is reflected in everything we do, from our land ethic to our tent-group policy. everyone is welcome on a Crystalaire Adventure. This often leads to difficult conversations during their trips, and our participants emerge as more conscientious, thoughtful people.

We Have Fun

What would be the point if we didn’t? Our curriculum encourages authentic, lasting relationships and our guides work to make the most mundane tasks entertaining. There may be moments of discomfort on your trip, but these often create the fondest memories!
